According to Juan Antonio Oseguera (2022), from Travel Pulse, Mexico was ranked as the second favorite destination worldwide in 2021. This great scenario for tourism continued in 2022 and this sector in Mexico is looking forward to reach better numbers in 2023.

Mexico is recovering with positive prospects. “The hotel industry represents 28.7 percent of Mexico’s tourism gross domestic product (GDP). Each hotel room generates 1.5 direct and three indirect jobs, equivalent to 9 percent of the jobs in the sector. By 2020, despite the pandemic, Mexico was already positioned as the seventh-best country for hotel infrastructure in the world.” (Oseguera, 2022).

In Mexico, the hotel industry represents 28.7 percent of tourism gross domestic product (GDP).

The positive scenario that this country has is based on its almost 200 places of archeological interest, more than 100 magical towns, and 34 sites recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It also has more than 11,000 kilometers of coastline. However, having resources is not enough.

Planning, strategy and investment are crucial to grow in the hospitality industry.

According to Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marques, by the end of February 2023, the tourism sector will have an investment of more than $10 million. This investment will be distributed between 521 projects within the tourism sector. He also stated that more than 75 percent of these projects involve the construction of new hotel rooms. This investment would be synonym of more than 115,000 new direct and indirect jobs.

The zones that will receive this help are, first of all, Nayarit, Mexico City and Baja California Sur. Obviously, because of its importance, Yucatán, Guerrero and Quintana Roo are also part of the sites’ list that will receive investments.

Sustainable Tourism is one of the key goals for Mexico in 2023, aligned with what tourists are looking for. One example of this focus in Mexico is Xala, a new Sustainable Development. It is about two hours from Puerto Vallarta and five minutes from the future site of the Costalegre Airport. This new development combines conscious travel with luxurious residences, three boutique hotels, one hostel and more. According to Travel Pulse, “the development, located on the west coast of Mexico on over 1,000 hectares of land, is expected to open its doors in 2023 after it finishes its first phase, which costs $125 million. The goal is to create a community-oriented destination focused on agriculture, farming and sustainability. Locals will also have access to nearly five miles of beaches as well as two estuaries”.

Xala will restore and protect the local environment. It’s already reforesting nearly 250 hectares of land, with 500 hectares preserved as a protected area. It will also create programs to protect the region’s reptiles, turtles, ocelots and other endangered species.

Another example of the importance of the sustainable tourism in Mexico is related to conferences that will take place in this country in 2023. In April, Cancun will be hosting three key conferences: – ICHTMM 2023: Hospitality, Tourism Marketing and Management Conference, – ICNBTHM 2023: Nature-Based Tourism and Hospitality Management Conference and – ICSTM 2023: Sustainable Tourism Management Conference.

Also, the State of Guanajuato will once again host the “Sustainable & Social Tourism Summit” in 2023. This event is the most important sustainable and socially responsible tourism event in Latin America.

Mexico’s Hotel Pipeline has important openings in 2023. According to Forbes (2022) and its article on “The 23 Most Anticipated Luxury Hotel Openings For 2023”, there will be three new hotels that will stand out for its luxury and sustainability values. These Hotels are:

  • EDITION (Riviera Maya at Kanai, Mexico)

With 180 guestrooms and suites, the hotel will be located within the luxurious Kanai development and will offer a signature restaurant, pool bar and beach club, spa, and a large Penthouse Suite. Located beachfront, this will be EDITION Hotels’ first property in Mexico.

  • FAIRMONT (La Paz, Mexico)

This new Baja resort will be located within the exclusive Puerta Cortés resort community in La Paz. Set on 550 acres of environmentally protected coastal lands and includes access to a superyacht marina and Mexico’s only Gary Player Signature Course – El Cortés Golf Club. The resort will consist of 61 one-to-four-bedroom branded residences with private plunge pools.

  • ST REGIS Kanai Resort (Riviera Maya, Mexico)

Located on the Mayan Riviera, the sustainable oceanfront resort will feature a sophisticated design with 124 guest rooms and suites and 32 villas with private pools. The unique resort will be split into intersecting circles built from white concrete and reflective semi-transparent crystal.
